Schatten
Cracked hooves carried the young brute over the new terrain. Schatten stayed true to his name, walking only in darkness where he was less likely to be seen. He had heard myths of the wild herds that roamed this area, and being free now, he planned to find them. Wether or not he was welcome, he didnt care. He was curious, he wanted to know the strength of these beasts. Wanted to know if his assumtions where true. They where ether weak, worthless creatures, or worse. Strong, born fighters who lived in deniel of the crule conditions of the fenced in horses that where not far off. If his second assumption was true, he would reak havoc on them all. How dare they let his herd suffer....
The ground here was just as hard as it had been at the human camp, the air just as cool and damp. A new season was coming, one he had not yet experianced. It was sad really the harshness of his life, yet he did not yet know the harshness of winter. He would learn, and fast. He could smell it in the air, though he didnt know what it was besides water. The leaves, once lush and green now turned died. He wished the humans would turn brown and die, worthless beings.
Muscles rippled over his still growing body, as he walked, no, stalked over the land. He didnt have to duck through the trees, but he made a mental note to know to do so when he was older. He took in everything, every sight, sound and smell. This would be his home now, no matter anyone liked it or not. His nares filled with the scent of water and, licking his parched lips, he sped up his pace.
A clearing, up ahead, he could see it now and the sound of falling water made his ears twitch forward. Stepping into the clearing he stood in awe of the water fall. He had never seen one before, and it looked of sheer power. He came to the waters edge and sniffed it. Finding it safe to drink, he found himself lapping it up as if he had gone without water for months. He realized the differance, this water was clean, not like the thick muddy water the humans gave him.
Having his full of water, his head raised to look around. This place was peacefull, in that was its only fault. Many equine had been here before him, and it was his assumption that soon, another would appear. He stood alert, ready for the confrontation he was sure to arrive.
When no one came in the moments after, he grew bored. In his youth, he still had little patients, and probably wouldnt for his whole life. Air left his lungs harshly as he sighed, things where to quite.
He became suddenly aware of the caked on dirt around his legs and looked to the cool water for a moment. It didnt seem deep enough to drown in so he stepped in slowly, feeling his way along the slippery rocks.
Wading in up to the crest of his chest, his eyes closed momentarily in relaxation. It wasnt like him to do that, but he couldnt help it, he had been through so much, and was only still a colt. Eyes still closed, he let his head tuck into his chest in a full horse-sleep posture. But, he remained awake, waiting.
